Trek to the Choquequirao Inca city located in the Vilcabamba Valley of Peru. During the Inca era, Choquequirao possibly rivaled Machu Picchu and now considered the sister city of Machu Picchu. This trek takes 4 days in the hot sun to reach the extraordinary Choquequirao ruins like Machu Pichu, they both have buildings with steep roofs, terraces, and massive walls. The main difference among them is that the only way to get to Choquequirao is by trekking and camping and is a challenging trek and one of the most difficult in the Cusco area. You will climb steep trails in the hot sun, while the nights are cold. The reward is reaching the Choquequirao ruins which is believed to have been the last refuge for the Incas before the Empire collapsed. The Spaniards never encountered this grandeur site in Peru. If you want to experience history then hike this amazing trail to the Cradle of Gold, Choquequirao.
We will depart early in the morning from your hotel in Cusco and take a ride for about 5 hours in our private transport in direction to the Apurimac River until reaching the community of Capulliyoc. This is the starting point of the challenging Choquequirao Trek, where we will meet our wranglers and horses that will carry our backpacks and camping equipment. Â We will enjoy lunch prepared by our cook. After lunch, we will begin hiking the steep downhill for approximately 3 hours towards Chiquisqa observing the impressive natural scenery of the Apurimac canyon, the deepest canyo in Peru, and possibly the second deepest in the world. Â At Chiquisqa, our team will make camp while you take time to enjoy the stunning beauty of the immensely deep canyon. There are mosquitos here, so make sure to bring repellent.

We will start out very early in the morning, to avoid the very hot sun.
The first 40 minutes of today’s hike is walking downhill to the Apurimac River until reaching Playa Rosalinas (1550mt.) and from there on to Santa Rosa, where we will have a short but well-deserved rest. The path of this second part of the day’s hike is a steep and zig-zagging route, but the experience will be fantastic with the help of our wranglers and horses. Afterwards, we will continue to Maranpata (2850 mt.) for about 4 to 5 hours, where you will observe the lower side of the Choquequirao ruins of Peru.  Following a very challenging trek we reach Maranpata, the gateway to Choquequirao. Relax at your campsite and have a delicious lunch before going to explore the magnificent ruins of Choquequirao.  Late in the evening, you might watch condors soaring on the winds from the canyon, and for sure you will enjoy this magical site under an incredible sky full of stars.
Starting altitude:Â 1930 masl
Camping altitude:Â 3100 masl
Distance:Â 13km

After breakfast, we will visit the lower site of the magnificent archaeological site of Choquequirao. These ruins are three times the size of Machu Picchu so it will take time to see everything.  More than 30% of Machu Picchu has been reconstructed unlike Choquequirao, which has less restoration, and you can still see part of the ruins covered by the jungle. Enjoy the private guided tour and explore all the beautiful sections of the temples, terraces, palaces, the llamas’ section, and much more. After our thorough exploration, we will return to our campsite to have an energizing lunch to give a boost of energy to continue the trek. We will walk on the same path all the way down to Chiquisqa, where we will have our last night of camping.
Starting altitude: 3100 masl
Camping altitude:Â 1930 masl
Distance:Â 13km
Average time:Â 6 hours
This morning after breakfast is the last challenging walk to the finish. Hike steep switchbacks taking you back up to the scenic overlook; this is a great area for spotting Condors. At the top, we’ll have a cold drink before continuing to the easy downhill back to Capulliyoc, where our transport will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Cusco.
Starting altitude: 1930 masl
