Today we will visit Arequipa, also known as the White City, due to the extensive use of ashlar, a white stone extracted from vast quarries formed by the lava of the volcanoes that surround and defend the city. In the afternoon, our guided tour of the city will take us to the Yanahuara viewpoint, made up of a series of ashlar arches on which the words of illustrious Arequipeños have been engraved.
Departing from Arequipa via Yura, passing through the slopes of Chachani, Pampa de Arrieros, and Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, where the slender vicuña can be spotted, we continue through Vizcachani, Pampas de Toccra, where a variety of birds can be observed. We will border the Chucura crater to get to Patapampa (4,800 masl) and Mirador de Los Andes, where you can see the volcanoes surrounding the city of Arequipa. Descent to the town of Chivay for lunch (not included).Accommodation in the hotel. Free afternoon to visit the La Calera thermal baths.
The city of Cusco, with its streets, enormous walls, and palaces built by the Incas, exhibits the colossal architecture of the capital of Tahuantinsuyo. When the Spanish conquerors arrived in this territory, they used the Inca stone-on-stone constructions as a base. They built churches, convents, and mansions on them, forming a peculiar symbiosis that gave a unique character to this imperial city declared in 1983 as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Today we will tour the city visiting the most important tourist places: the Cathedral, Plaza de Armas, Convent of Santo Domingo or Koricancha, and the four most essential ruins near Cusco: Kenko, the ancient religious center; Tambomachay, called “The Baths of the Inca”; Pucapucara and Sacsayhuaman; ancient fortresses that impress with their architecture.
